George Pickens of the Steelers attributes his limited playing time to offensive coordinator Arthur Smith

After starting the season with three consecutive wins, the Steelers have now lost two in a row. Both losses were by three points, leaving Pittsburgh with a 3-2 record. In Week 5, they suffered a 20-17 defeat to the Cowboys after giving up a last-second touchdown. The Steelers will be on the road in Week 6 to take on the Las Vegas Raiders.

During media interviews this week, George Pickens expressed frustration about his limited playing time this season. The 23-year-old wide receiver attributed this to offensive coordinator Arthur Smith. Despite being considered the most talented WR on the team, Pickens has not been utilized as a true WR1. Will his public comments lead to a change in his role moving forward?

George Pickens is frustrated with his offensive usage in Steelers

In the second round of the 2022 NFL draft, the Steelers selected WR George Pickens from Georgia. As a rookie, Pickens played in all 17 games, starting 12, and recorded 52 catches for 801 yards and four touchdowns. In 2023, he played in all 17 games, starting 16, and finished with 63 catches for 1,140 yards and five touchdowns, leading the league in yards per reception (18.1). His ability to make explosive plays downfield was evident last season.

However, five games into the 2024 season, Pickens has not had a strong start. He has only surpassed 100 receiving yards in one game and is playing less than his previous season, with a 73% snap percentage compared to 87% in 2023. Under Arthur Smith’s offense, the Steelers have been focusing more on the running game, averaging 32.8 rushing attempts per game compared to 27.4 pass attempts. This shift in offensive strategy has affected Pickens’ performance early in the season. Will Pickens’ candid remarks spark a change in his involvement in Week 6?
