On Sunday night (June 23), hosts Germany faced Switzerland in EURO 2024 Group A, aiming to secure their third consecutive win. The match took place at the Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt, where Die Mannschaft were unable to clinch a victory against the Swiss army, resulting in a 1-1 draw on Matchday 3. Despite the draw, Germany claimed the top spot in Group A, while Switzerland finished as the runners-up.

Switzerland Takes the Lead Against the Run of Play

Germany, who had previously defeated Scotland 5-1 and Hungary 2-0, entered the Matchday 3 clash as favorites. The team dominated the game from the start, launching continuous attacks in the Swiss half. In the 17th minute, Robert Andrich scored a goal from outside the area, but it was disallowed after a VAR check revealed a foul by Jamal Musiala in the build-up. Switzerland then took the lead in the 28th minute through a well-executed play involving Fabian Rieder, Remo Freuler, and Dan Ndoye. Despite Germany’s efforts, they entered halftime trailing.

Germany Equalizes Late in the Game

In the second half, Germany came back determined to score. Musiala had a shot blocked by Yann Sommer, and several other attempts by Gundogan, Kimmich, and Havertz were off target. Switzerland thought they had secured the win with Ruben Vargas’s goal in the 83rd minute, but it was ruled out for offside. Xhaka’s long-range shot was saved by Neuer, keeping Germany in the game. In injury time, substitute Niclas Fullkrug headed in the equalizer from David Raum’s cross, delighting the fans in the stadium.

Switzerland will face the runners-up of Group B in the Round of 16 on Saturday evening (June 29), while Germany will play against the runners-up of Group C later that night.
