A new groin injury has sidelined Gio Reyna at Borussia Dortmund.
Reyna will be out for “a few weeks” after returning from the U.S. men’s national team camp, as confirmed by Dortmund manager Nuri Sahin on Wednesday. He had to leave the USMNT camp early, missing out on matches against Canada and New Zealand.
Having made only one appearance for Borussia Dortmund this season, Reyna faces another frustrating spell on the sidelines.
“Gio Reyna will be out; he has picked up an injury with the national team,” Sahin said. “He came straight back [from the national team] and I found him extremely sad; unfortunately, it will take a few weeks. And then I hope that he can continue on this good path afterwards.”
Reyna, 21, spent the second half of last season on loan at English Premier League side Nottingham Forest, where he got one assist in nine appearances. However, his playing time was limited in both Germany and England last season, hindering his development.
Injuries have affected Reyna’s time with Borussia Dortmund and the USMNT, causing him to miss out on 69 potential appearances for club and country. He is now set to miss the beginning of the UEFA Champions League schedule with Dortmund, along with several Bundesliga matches.
Borussia Dortmund will face Heidenheim in their upcoming league match on Friday.
