Golf course maintenance crew lose control of cart and drive it off bridge

Golf cart

The life of a golf course maintenance crew can be a hectic one, but going too fast in a golf cart is never a good idea, as these guys found out.

Sometimes you have to put the hammer down, but you have to question the merits of doing so while crossing a bridge over water.

These maintenance guys learnt that lesson the hard way…

Golf Course Speed Limits

On public golf courses, it is generally recommended that all carts be driven at a maximum speed of 20 miles per hour. However, you will note that certain courses have tougher speed limitations shown on the course map. For example, some courses in the United Kingdom have a 10-mph speed limit for carts on the course.

Other courses may have a greater speed restriction for carts, particularly those used for instructional or other specialised programmes, such as beginning or senior carts. Furthermore, some private or semi-private courses may have differing speed limitations for carts on the course, based on the owner’s preferences and property constraints. So, if you want to play on a course with varying cart speed limitations.

How fast can a golf cart go?

The manufacturer of the golf cart, like with other things, has a big influence on this.

While it is not unusual to see a range of speed limits on public golf carts, the most common ones we’ve observed are 10, 15, and 20 mph.

However, there exist golf carts with higher speed capabilities, sometimes known as “high-speed” or “performance” golf carts. These carts can attain speeds of 20 to 25 mph (32 to 40 km/h). It’s crucial to remember that altering a golf cart or driving it at excessive speeds may be prohibited on some golf courses or residential neighbourhoods owing to safety concerns and restrictions.

At the absolute least, your golf cart will have a speed rating displayed someplace on the outside. However, no matter where you play, you should always double-check this figure against the golf course guidelines.

The regulations might vary depending on the type of golf cart and the course on which it is utilised. For example, carts used on a golf course’s driving range typically have significantly greater speed limitations.
