Golf is a sport that has sometimes been criticised for its lack of inclusion of certain communities, with many campaigns actioned to provide a higher level of access to golfing events for a wider demographic of players. But, the landscape is changing.
In an exciting step for disability golf, it has been announced that the Golf for the Disabled Tour will hold an event at a PGA Tour tournament for the first time in April, which has been welcome news for the golf community. The G4D Tour is open to golfers who have a physical, intellectual or sensory disability.
The G4D event will be played at the same time as the CJ Cup Byron Nelson in Texas on April 29th and 30th. The G4D team revamped the format ahead of the 2023/24 Tour, providing further opportunities for a diverse range of players.
The top eight men and top two women in the world rankings will compete in a strokeplay competition. The tour will also cover eight tournaments in five different countries, visiting Africa for the first time at the Magical Kenya Open.
American Chris Biggins, who is currently ranked third in the world, told how this will be a “dream come true”, adding, “The G4D Tour has already changed my life.”
“It has grown every year, and with this huge step, it will surely skyrocket some more. It will be a dream come true to play a G4D Tour event in front of a home crowd, alongside an event I have watched since I was a kid,” he continues.
Jay Monahan, the PGA Tour’s commissioner, back from a leave of absence, commented:
“It is an honour to showcase the world’s best golfers with a disability at The CJ Cup Byron Nelson for what is sure to be an exciting and memorable experience for each participant.”
