Goretzka shines in Bayern victory, capturing attention

Eze and Olise star in Premier League Team of the Week

Euro-Star: Goretzka under the spotlight following brilliant Bayern display

Euro-Star returns this week to look at one of the top rated performances across Europe, excluding the Premier League with that covered in the team of the week write up that went live on Monday.

As usual, we relied on our X followers to vote for they want to see written about this week, with Iago Aspas, Robin Hack, Alexandru Maxim and Leon Goretzka all options. Narrowly pipping Aspas to top spot was Bayern star Gortezka, who claimed 38.3% of the votes.

Bayern Munich made the trip to the capital to face Union Berlin on Saturday evening in their first league game since losing their Bundesliga title to Bayer Leverkusen. The capital side were in for a rough 90 minutes as FC Hollywood took out their frustration on Nenad Bjelica’s side, easing to a 5-1 win.

Goretzka was the star of the show for Thomas Tuchel’s side having returned a WhoScored rating of 9.54, marking his second best rated outing of the campaign. The German has been directly involved in 12 league goals this season, two of which came in the capital over the weekend.

The 29-year-old got the ball rolling for Bayern on the half hour mark, finding the back of the net with one of three shots before turning provider for Thomas Muller midway through the second half with one of two key passes. In addition, Goretzka excelled off the ball as he made four tackles and was a driving force from deep when he won possession as he completed three dribbles.

In truth, it was a nigh-on perfect all-round central midfield display from Goretzka, who continues to be one of Bayern’s more consistent performers. The hope now is that both player and club will build momentum ahead of their Champions League semi-final showdown with Real Madrid.

With just Europe’s elite club competition to play for, Bayern will look to end a sub-par season on a high as Tuchel chases down the Champions League for the second time. With Goretzka hitting his stride, they stand a much stronger chance of setting up a meeting with PSG or fellow Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund at Wembley at the start of June.
