Griffin Yow registers first-half brace in Westerlo win

Griffin Yow registers first-half brace in Westerlo win

Westerlo’s quest to reach the Belgian First Division top-six received another major boost on Tuesday thanks to Griffin Yow’s Man of the Match performance.

Yow registered his first multi-goal performance in Westerlo’s 4-2 league triumph over Cercle Brugge. The former DC United homegrown scored twice and played 74 minutes as Westerlo earned points for the second-straight match.

The 21-year-old Yow broke the deadlock after seven minutes, slotting home Tuur Rommens pass for a 1-0 advantage. It marked Yow’s first goal since Boxing Day and his fourth overall in all competitions.

After boosting Westerlo in front, Yow doubled his tally and his side’s lead only 12 minutes later. His close-range finish in the 19th minute made it 2-0 to the hosts and continued a busy first-half for Westerlo overall.

Nicolas Madsen and Romeo Vermant both added goals before halftime to give Westerlo a commanding 4-0 advantage. Despite an own goal from Serhiy Sydorchuk and a late consolation goal from Flavio Nazinho, Westerlo hung on for a sixth league triumph of the campaign.

Yow also won five duels, completed two dribbles, and drew one foul in his performance. Fellow American Bryan Reynolds logged 90 minutes at right back for Westerlo.

Up next for Westerlo is a Feb. 3 showdown with OH Leuven in league action.
