Guinea Completes Group A for USMNT Olympic Team

USMNT Olympic squad sees Guinea round out Group A

The U.S. men’s olympic national team learned its final group stage opponent for the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics.

Guinea rounded out Group A after defeating Indonesia 1-0 on Thursday in a playoff qualifying match. The Americans will now meet France, New Zealand, and Guinea this summer.

Thierry Henry’s Les Bleus squad will oppose Marko Mitrovic’s men on July 24 in both teams’ opening match. The Americans also face New Zealand on July 27 before concluding group stage play on July 30 against Guinea.

The USMNT faced both France and Guinea last March in a pair of friendlies, tying 2-2 and winning 3-0 respectively.

Mitrovic’s roster will mainly feature players under the age of 23-years-old, with three players above that age allowed. Gianluca Busio, Cade Cowell, Jack McGlynn, and Esmir Bajraktarevic were among the players called into the last international window in March.

The USMNT’s Olympic involvement will be their first since 2008.

“It’s an important day for every team to learn their opponents and the challenges that await in the Olympic Games,” said Mitrović back when the USMNT learned their group stage schedule. “We know that this is an elite tournament, with 16 elite teams that are the best in their confederations. Now, we can picture the opponents, the cities and the stadiums where we’ll play. The excitement is here. We will keep that excitement over the next four months of work, preparing in the best way possible to convert that excitement into achievement on the field.”
