Haji Wright’s goal not enough as Coventry City’s FA Cup dream dashed in semifinal shootout

Haji Wright scores but Coventry City's FA Cup run ends with semifinal shootout loss

Coventry City’s hopes of reaching their first FA Cup Final since 1987 were dashed on Sunday at Wembley Stadium, but the Sky Blues can hold their heads up high after a valiant effort.

Haji Wright scored once in the match, but Coventry ultimately fell 4-2 on penalty kicks to Manchester United after a thrilling 3-3 draw in regular time. Wright’s 95th-minute penalty equalizer forced extra time, but Manchester United managed to secure the victory, setting up a Final clash with Manchester City on May 26.

Despite trailing 3-0 after 58 minutes following goals from Scott McTominay, Harry Maguire, and Bruno Fernandes, Coventry City fought back admirably. Ellis Simms and Callum O’Hare scored within eight minutes of each other before Wright converted a crucial penalty in stoppage time. This goal marked Wright’s third in the competition this season.

Both teams had opportunities to win the game in extra time, with Fernandes and Simms hitting the crossbar. Victor Torp appeared to have scored the winning goal, but VAR ruled it out due to Wright’s offside position during the play.

Bradley Collins denied Casemiro’s spot kick in the shootout, but Coventry City missed two of their own chances. O’Hare’s shot was saved by Andre Onana, while Ben Sheaf sent his effort over the bar. Rasmus Hojlund converted the decisive kick in the fifth round to secure the win for Manchester United.

With their FA Cup journey now over, Coventry City’s focus turns to their promotion aspirations. Sitting just outside the top-six with four matches remaining, the Sky Blues will need to win all their remaining games to have any chance of securing promotion ahead of their competitors.
