Manchester United’s 2-1 comeback win over Crystal Palace on Sunday was marred by concerning injury news regarding Harry Maguire.
The seasoned defender had to leave the game in the final minutes, compounding the defensive troubles faced by coach Michael Carrick.
Maguire has been integral to Carrick’s strengthened defense but seemed to sustain a knock late in the second half.
After some on-field treatment, he was substituted for 17-year-old Ayden Heaven in the 85th minute.
Instead of joining his teammates on the bench, Maguire went directly to the dressing room, raising concerns about a potentially serious injury.
Analysis from Dion Dublin
Former United striker Dion Dublin, providing commentary for BBC Radio 5 Live, commented on the alarming nature of Maguire’s exit:
“Harry Maguire departed straight down the tunnel with the medical staff. It didn’t seem to be a tactical decision; he appeared to be in significant discomfort as he passed by.”
This injury adds to United’s woes, with Luke Shaw also exiting the match early due to injury.
With Lisandro Martínez and Matthijs de Ligt already unavailable, Carrick is facing tough choices ahead of a vital match against Newcastle United.
Manchester United’s Impressive Form Under Carrick
Regardless of the injury challenges, the transformation under Carrick is evident.
After falling behind from a Maxence Lacroix header, United demonstrated resilience, turning the game around following Lacroix’s second-half red card.
Bruno Fernandes equalized through a penalty, and Benjamin Sesko sealed the victory with a header in the 65th minute.
This win marks United’s tenth consecutive unbeaten match in the Premier League, propelling them to third place in the standings.
Since taking charge from Ruben Amorim in mid-January, Carrick has reshaped the team into one of the most effective in the league.
