Argentina has reached the final of Copa America with a 2-0 victory over Canada. Nonetheless, Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni is eager for European teams to participate in the competition to showcase its true difficulty.
Scaloni’s Demonstrated Success with Argentina
Argentina currently holds the top global position and is on the verge of claiming their third trophy in the last three major tournaments. Since assuming the role of head coach in 2018, Scaloni has revitalized the national team and brought significant success to the country.
He guided Argentina to their first Copa America title since 1993 in 2021. The following year, he led the team to victory in the World Cup, a feat that had eluded Argentina since 1986.
Many believe he has been a game-changer for captain Lionel Messi, who was once thought to end his career without a major trophy for his home nation despite his illustrious achievements.
On Sunday, Messi could potentially secure his third trophy with Argentina in just three years, leading critics to question the competitiveness of Copa America compared to the Euros.
Scaloni’s Response to Critics
An impassioned Scaloni responded: ‘I believe the difficulty level is similar across competitions. There are prominent teams in the Euros semi-finals that we have faced in the World Cup with positive outcomes. However, that doesn’t guarantee success in the European Championship.’
‘Perhaps we could succeed there as well. I perceive the competition to be equally challenging. It would be intriguing to invite a European team to Copa America and vice versa to experience the tournament’s intensity.’
‘Ultimately, it would resemble the World Cup, right? Hence, the difficulty remains constant. In my view, there isn’t a significant disparity. These are just personal viewpoints.’
The final opponent for Argentina is yet to be determined, as Uruguay faces Colombia at 8pm EST this Wednesday. The final match is scheduled for 8pm EST on Sunday, July 14th, at the Hard Rock stadium.
