Liverpool has suffered a major setback as key right-back Jeremie Frimpong left the match early due to injury during the Netherlands’ game against Ecuador on Tuesday night.
The 25-year-old, who made the move to Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen last summer, came off the bench as a substitute for Cody Gakpo but was unable to continue after just 12 minutes, limping straight down the tunnel.
Ronald Koeman Addresses Frimpong’s Injury
In the post-match briefing following the 1-1 stalemate in Eindhoven, Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman reported that the withdrawal was necessary due to injury.
Although the precise details are yet to be clarified by the Dutch medical team, early indications point to a recurrence of the muscular issues that have troubled Frimpong during his first season at Liverpool.
“It’s a muscular issue. Jeremie felt a sharp sensation, and we couldn’t take any chances. It’s unfortunate for him and for his club, especially after coming on so recently,” Koeman stated.
Frimpong’s Challenging Debut Season
This injury adds to the difficulties of what has already been an inconsistent first season for the £29.5 million acquisition.
After starting strong with a goal in the Community Shield, Frimpong has faced two significant injuries this season.
He was absent for the first month of the Premier League due to a hamstring injury and then spent nearly eight weeks out between December and February.
This latest injury comes at a time when he had just reclaimed his starting position under manager Arne Slot, having recently played 60 minutes in each of Liverpool’s last three outings before the international break.
Liverpool’s Defensive Dilemma
With a vital FA Cup match against Manchester City approaching on Saturday, Liverpool’s defensive lineup is under severe strain.
Backup right-back Conor Bradley is out for the season due to a knee injury.
Manager Slot may need to utilize Dominik Szoboszlai as an emergency right-back again, potentially leaving a void in midfield.
This recent injury amplifies concerns regarding Liverpool’s squad depth as they compete for the Premier League title and pursue success in cup competitions.
