Hobart: Wild Card Preston Shocks Raducanu, Secures Semifinal Spot

In a stunning upset at the WTA 250 Hobart International, British top seed Emma Raducanu was eliminated in the quarter-finals by Australian wild-card Taylah Preston. The match ended in straight sets, with Preston claiming victory with a score of 6-2, 6-4, disrupting Raducanu’s preparations for the upcoming Australian Open set to commence this Sunday.

The match began with Raducanu making a promising start, breaking Preston in the very first game. However, the momentum quickly shifted as Preston fought back to break Raducanu’s serve immediately. Following a rain delay, which lasted an hour, Preston demonstrated impressive form, overtaking Raducanu and ultimately sealing the first set with another break of serve.

Preston, ranked No. 204 in the world, propelled her career with this significant win, marking her first semi-final appearance on the WTA Tour. Prior to this match, the 20-year-old had only registered one tour-level victory, which occurred in San Diego last year. Her triumph over Raducanu represents her first career win against a Top 30 player, further increasing the excitement among her home crowd.

“I don’t really know what to say,” stated Preston after her match, clearly elated at her achievement. “I’m just really happy that I’m through to the next round and get to play here again in front of everyone.”

This victory adds to an impressive week for Preston, who had previously defeated the No. 5 seed, Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, and Rebecca Sramkova in prior rounds. Although she faced ups and downs in her ranking, having dropped to No. 266 last September after an inconsistent spell, Preston’s recent success in Australian ITF events has helped her regain her competitive edge.

Raducanu, currently ranked 29th in the world, has experienced a rougher than expected start to her season, having lost a significant match to an opponent outside the Top 200 for only the second time in her professional career. Despite making strides early in the second set with a break, she struggled to maintain her lead as Preston continued to produce powerful shots, including an impressive 21 winners against Raducanu’s 9.

As Preston now moves on to the semi-finals, she will face American Iva Jovic, the tournament’s third seed, who triumphed over the eighth seed Magda Linette in a three-set battle. Jovic had previously served for the match but had to endure a tough fightback from Linette before securing her spot with a final score of 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-2.

In another quarter-final, Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto showcased her dominance against Hungary’s Anna Bondar, winning decisively 6-2, 6-2. Even with multiple rain delays, Cocciaretto maintained her focus and aggression, resulting in a match that ended up being much more straightforward compared to their earlier encounter that year, which lasted over nine hours due to interruptions.

Cocciaretto’s comprehensive victory sees her advance to face Antonia Ruzic, who reached her first WTA semi-final after defeating Olga Danilovic 6-3, 6-3. With a head-to-head advantage over Cocciaretto from their previous matches, the semi-final clash promises to be a thrilling encounter.

As the tournament progresses, the stage is set for an exciting conclusion at the Hobart International, with both seasoned competitors and rising stars showcasing their talents as they head toward the Australian Open.
