Holger Rune Reveals Factors Contributing to His Challenging Loss in the Indian Wells Final

Holger Rune was able to identify the reasons behind his loss in the 2025 Indian Wells Open relatively quickly.

Rune was playing some inspired tennis at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Indian Wells. He beat Corentin Moutet, Ugo Humbert, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Tallon Griekspoor, and Daniil Medvedev to reach the final.

Many of his opponents were coming to Indian Wells in great form, so all of the Dane’s wins were very impressive. In the final, however, Jack Draper beat Rune 6-2, 6-2, which was a very dominant win for the British player.

Draper played a great match, but at the same time, Rune wasn’t at his best. He knew that he could have played better, and the 2022 Paris Masters champion was quick to recognize that after the match.

Following his loss, the 21-year-old Dane was asked about his performance, and he admitted that he quickly discussed it with his coach to identify the reasons behind his loss.

“No, I actually just spoke to my coach after the match, and we got things evaluated quite quickly, which is always a nice feeling. We spoke about obviously Jack played an amazing tournament, and he deserved to win today. You know, he was serving amazing, for sure.”

Although Rune could recognize his opponent’s qualities, he also knew that he could have played better and trouble his opponent more. The one thing that he pointed out was his play in crucial moments.

Rune felt that when he had chances, he couldn’t fully commit to his aggressive style, which is why he wasn’t able to use those chances.

“But I think I could have done my part better. Like the opportunities I had to play aggressive just weren’t good enough. I think it’s a matter of fact that I haven’t committed — I mean, I have been playing well in this tournament, been playing tactically very wisely, but I haven’t played, like, fully committed to my aggressive game still.”

“I think that’s what was the reason why I lost today, because when I had to take — like, how can I explain the best way? Jack was playing extremely well, but the few chances I had to make it difficult for him, I didn’t quite take them, because I wasn’t really trusting every shot of my game today.”

Rune will have a chance to forget his loss and do even better at the upcoming tournament, which is the Miami Open. The ATP Masters 1000 event in Miami starts on March 19th, and Rune is the 11th seed. In the second round, he will start his tournament against the winner of the match between Christopher Eubanks and Reilly Opelka.
