Hong Kong: Musetti Within Two Matches of Breaking Title Drought

As the tennis season unfolds, Lorenzo Musetti is looking to shake off a title drought that has extended since 2022. Despite the notable success of Italian players such as Jannik Sinner and Matteo Berrettini in recent years, Musetti has yet to add silverware to his accolades since his last victory. He made significant strides in the past year, including reaching three finals, with the closest miss occurring in Chengdu against Alejandro Tabilo, where he fell short despite holding two championship points at his disposal. Nevertheless, Musetti has achieved a peak ranking of No. 6 in the ATP standings.

Musetti’s fortunes may be shifting at the Hong Kong Tennis Open, where he is the tournament’s top seed. In his quarterfinal match, he demonstrated composure and skill, overcoming Hong Kong’s Coleman Wong with a score of 6-4, 6-4 to secure his place in the semifinals of this ATP 250 event supported by the Bank of China.

Looking ahead, Musetti faces a formidable challenge as he goes up against Andrey Rublev, the event’s third seed and a previous champion. Rublev advanced to the semifinals with a solid 6-3, 6-4 victory over Portugal’s Nuno Borges. Musetti acknowledges the challenge ahead, stating, “I knew I had to be really solid from the beginning. It was a really close match, but I stayed really focused until the end. I’m really happy and proud to start 2026 well.”

Rublev, on the other hand, expressed satisfaction with his performance in the quarterfinals, highlighting his 22 winners and his success in saving a break point. Although he has a historical edge over Musetti with a 1-0 record in their previous encounter, that meeting occurred six years ago when Musetti was still establishing himself on the tour. “Lorenzo is playing unbelievable tennis the last couple of years; he’s getting better and better,” Rublev noted. “When I played him the first time, he was super young, so it doesn’t really count. I need to be really ready for a good fight if I want to have a chance.”

In the bottom half of the draw, second seed Alexander Bublik managed to secure his semifinal berth after overcoming China’s Shang Juncheng in a match that concluded with a scoreline of 6-1, 7-6(2). This victory marks Bublik’s passage to his 23rd career semifinal.

Bublik’s ascent in the rankings is noteworthy; victory in Hong Kong could potentially elevate him into the top ten for the first time. However, he will face Marcos Giron in the semifinals after Giron’s previous opponent, Michael Mmoh, withdrew due to injury while trailing 6-3, 1-0. Reflecting on his match against Shang, Bublik remarked, “It’s very tough to play when he’s in the mood. In the second set, he was playing unbelievable tennis. I hope I can maintain the momentum and continue well.”

With high stakes and promising matchups, the Hong Kong Tennis Open sets the stage for exciting semifinals, showcasing rising stars and established talents alike as they vie for crucial ranking points and the chance to lift the trophy.
