Hong Kong | Wong Leaves a Lasting Impression

Coleman Wong made history at the Bank of China Hong Kong Tennis Open, becoming the first player from Hong Kong to win a match at this home event. The young wildcard defeated Argentine Mariano Navone with a scoreline of 6-3, 7-5, showcasing his growing potential ahead of the Australian Open. This marked Wong’s third appearance at the tournament and sets him up for a next-round encounter with Canadian Gabriel Diallo, who progressed by overcoming Jesper De Jong in a tightly contested match that ended 6-4, 7-6(7).

In another notable performance, Shang Junchen also found success, defeating Francisco Comesana in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. This victory is particularly significant for Shang, who has been sidelined with injuries since competing in Shanghai last October. Despite having peaked at a career-high ranking of No. 47, he currently sits at No. 406 but looks to regain his form as he prepares to face Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego in the next round.

Defending champion Alexandre Muller continued his strong performance in Hong Kong, defeating Miomir Kecmanovic with a score of 7-5, 6-4. The Frenchman, who won his first title at this event last year, will take on American Marcos Giron, who dominated Laslo Djere with a decisive 6-2, 6-0 victory.

Other players making headway in the tournament include fifth seed Sonego, who triumphed over Japan’s Rei Sakamoto with a score of 6-2, 7-6(4). Argentina’s Tomas Martin Etcheverry also advanced after a solid match against Valentin Royer, winning 6-4, 7-5, and setting up a challenge against top seed and world No. 7 Lorenzo Musetti.

Botic van de Zandschulp moved forward in the draw as well, having edged past Jan-Lennard Struff with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 scoreline, and is slated to face second seed Alexander Bublik in the upcoming rounds. The tournament continues to heat up as players aim to build momentum heading into the first Grand Slam of the season.
