What to Know
If the oddsmakers’ predictions hold true, the near future looks bright for Maryland. They will finish 2023 at home by hosting the Coppin State Eagles at 7:00 p.m. ET on Thursday at Xfinity Center. The timing is sure in Maryland’s favor as the squad sits on 18 straight wins at home (dating back to last season) while Coppin State has not had much luck on the away from home, with nine straight road losses.
Winning is just a little bit easier when you make seven more threes than your opponent, a fact Maryland proved on Friday. They walked away with a 69-60 victory over the Bruins.
Maryland can attribute much of their success to Jahmir Young, who scored 37 points along with seven rebounds. That’s the first time this season that Young scored 30 or more points. Another player making a difference was Donta Scott, who scored 17 points along with six rebounds.
Meanwhile, Coppin State was expected to have a tough go of it last Tuesday and that exactly how things played out. They were completely outmatched by the Dukes on the road and fell 87-48. Coppin State was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 49-26.
The Terrapins have been performing incredibly well recently as they’ve won seven of their last eight games, which provided a massive bump to their 8-4 record this season. As for the Eagles, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-12.
Thursday’s match is shaping up to be a scrappy matchup: Maryland have been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 37.6 rebounds per game. It’s a different story for Coppin State, though, as they’ve been averaging only 29.3 rebounds per game. Given Maryland’s sizeable advantage in that area, Coppin State will need to find a way to close that gap.
Maryland strolled past Coppin State when the teams last played back in November of 2022 by a score of 95-79. Does Maryland have another victory up their sleeve, or will Coppin State turn the tables on them? We’ll have the answer soon enough.
