Australia’s Arina Rodionova upset 6th-seeded Yaun Yue of China, 7-6(6) 4-6 6-3, in 2 hours and 52 minutes in the 1st-round at the WTA 250 Thailand Open in Hua Hin on Tuesday.
Yuan held triple set point in the first set tiebreak before Rodionova won 5 straight points to charge back, level the score, and, ultimately, move ahead to claim the set.
China’s Lin Zhu, the No 2 seed and now the highest seed left standing after top-ranked Magda Linette of Poland lost on Monday, beat another Australian, Taylah Preston, 6-4 7-5, and will meet Linda Fruhvirtova in the 2nd-round after the 18-year old Czech eliminated American Claire Liu, 6-3 6-1, also on Tuesday.
Tatjana Maria, the No 4 seed from Germany, advanced with a 6-3 6-1 win over Arianne Hartono, a qualifier from the Netherlands, while 7th-seeded Yulia Putintseva was in danger against local wild-card Thasaporn Naklo after losing the first set from 4-0 up, but the Russian-born Kazakh rebounded to win 10 of the last 12 games from 2-3 down in the second set to eventually pull through, 5-7 6-3 6-2, after 2 hours 22 minutes.
Meanwhile, Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, the No 8 seed from Slovakia, also came through in two tight tiebreak sets, 7-6(5) 7-6(8), and will meet Wang Yafan from China, who saw off Alina Korneeva, the 16-year old Russian, 6-2 6-4.
Elsewhere, American Katie Volynets got past Slovenia’s Tamara Zidansek, 6-2 6-2, to set up a 2nd-round meeting with Maria, while Zhuoxuan Bai, another Chinese, edged her way past French qualifier, Chloe Paquet, 7-6(5) 6-3, and will play Rodionova next.
