The Legends Tour season kicks off in fine style with the inaugural Barbados Legends at Apes Hill. Host Ian Woosnam can’t wait

Ian Woosnam is excited to welcome top-class golf back to Barbados as he hosts the opening Legends Tour event of the 2024 season at Apes Hill for the Barbados Legends.

The field includes former US Open champion Michael Campbell and Augusta National winner Angel Cabrera among others.

Staged from May 3 to 5, this event marks a return of top-class golf to Barbados after a 15-year absence and commences a record Legends Tour year with 20 events, on four continents, boasting a total prize fund of 18 million euros.

“It’s fantastic to have the pros back in Barbados, have amateurs play, and showcase Apes Hill with its stunning views and fantastic golf course,” Woosnam remarked.

Legends Tour events span three days and offer amateurs the chance to compete alongside professionals and celebrities in a live tournament setting.

Apes Hill, situated 1,000 feet above sea level and redesigned by the late Ron Kirby, promises a challenging and enjoyable experience for all players at the Saint James venue.

“The course offers panoramic views with the first nine overlooking the Caribbean Sea and the back nine showcasing the east coast. It’s a perfect length for seniors and amateurs with a good mix of difficulty and enjoyment,” Woosnam elaborated.

“Holes like 12, 13, 14, 16, and 18 will be crucial, especially the challenging par 3 on the 12th which plays 220 yards straight into the wind,” he added.

Barbados Legends: ‘I just want to make sure everyone enjoys it’

Ian Woosnam has played a significant role in organizing the Barbados Legends event, overseeing logistics from course setup to menu options.

Reflecting on this experience, Woosnam stated, “It’s been quite interesting seeing what goes on behind the scenes… It’s a learning curve for me, and I’m using my experience to create the right atmosphere for everybody to enjoy.”

He emphasized the importance of ensuring everyone has a good time, expressing, “I’d love to perform well, but my main goal is to ensure that everyone enjoys the event, especially my amateur partner. That’s the priority as a senior golfer.”
