Iga Swiatek seems to be absolutely unstoppable in Indian Wells, and she confirmed it with yet another incredibly dominant win.
Swiatek didn’t lose more than two games in either of her two matches at the Indian Wells Open this year. She first beat Caroline Garcia, 6-2, 6-0, and she then outplayed Dayana Yastremska, 6-0, 6-2.
The Pole’s dominance in Indian Wells has been so significant that she had to face multiple questions about her performance. She explained her mindset, saying that she always approaches every rally the same, regardless of the scoreboard.
She wanted to bring that approach to her fourth-round match against Karolina Muchova, but her plans were initially halted. The match had to be stopped because of rain even before it began, though the players had already walked onto the court.
The match start was postponed, but that didn’t change Swiatek’s dominance. The five-time Grand Slam champion started with a break and quickly added another to lead 4-0 after the first four games.
Muchova then avoided being bageled by winning the following game, but the two-time Indian Wells Open champion still dominated the remainder of the set to win it 6-1.
Swiatek continued her strong performance in the second set, once again breaking Muchova’s serve, and there was no coming back for the Czech player.
The four-time Roland Garros champion kept winning rallies, and in less than an hour, she won the match 6-1, 6-1. This marked yet another match in which Swiatek lost only two games, as she has in all her matches at the Indian Wells Open this year.
During her on-court interview, the WTA World No. 2 explained that this match was a bit challenging for her due to the rain delay, but she was aware that the situation was the same for her opponent as well.
“For sure, I felt great. Even though today my routines… well, everyone’s routines became different. I was able to adjust. I’m happy about that. I used all my chances, and I’m pretty happy I played with such confidence and could finish it quickly before the rain started.”
Swiatek might now have an advantage over her opponent in the next round. She will take on the winner of the match between the eighth-seeded Qinwen Zheng and 18th-seeded Marta Kostyuk.
However, immediately after Swiatek’s match ended, it started raining in Indian Wells again, making it likely that Zheng’s and Kostyuk’s match won’t be played on Tuesday.
It’s scheduled as the last match of Tuesday’s schedule, and if postponed to Wednesday, Swiatek might gain a day of recovery on her next opponent.
