In the NFL Draft, Nick Wright Criticizes Team for Getting ‘Too Clever’

Many feel the Dallas Cowboys have had a lackluster offseason, and some would even call it a failure.

They have lost multiple key players in free agency, including starting running back Tony Pollard, and it has led to the running back position being arguably their biggest weakness right now.

While Dallas brought back an old favorite in Ezekiel Elliott a couple of days ago, he isn’t exactly the threat he used to be.

Nick Wright pointed out on FS1’s “First Things First” that they had the opportunity to address the RB position in last week’s draft, but that they got “too cute.”

Wright mentioned Jonathon Brooks, who went at No. 46, as someone the Cowboys were interested in, but they failed to make a move in order to nab him.

They have had one of the NFL’s most talented rosters over the last few years, but despite winning 12 games in each of the last three years, they have exited early in the playoffs each time.

Dallas hasn’t made it as far as the NFC Championship Game since 1995, which was also the last time they won the Super Bowl championship.

Even though they had the league’s top scoring offense last season, their running game was mediocre, and Pollard’s production fell after his breakout 2022 campaign in which he was named to the Pro Bowl.

Right now, it appears Dallas’ main focus is clearing enough salary cap space to re-sign Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and Micah Parsons, which means that their missed opportunities in the draft will only be magnified, since those players will be on team-friendly contracts for the next few years.
