Joint tournament favourite in the betting, Jannik Sinner also delivered a bagel en route to his 6-3 6-0 win over Thanasi Kokkinakis.
There were also solid straight-set wins for Andrey Rublev, Sascha Zverev, Alex de Minaur, and Stefanos Tsitsipas. Just two of the fifteen seeds in action weren’t able to make progress: Karen Khachanov fell to the dangerous Thiago Seyboth Wild, while Fabian Marozsan took out 24th seed Nicolas Jarry.

Alcaraz Hits Back to See Off Arnaldi
Carlos Alcaraz recovered from a set down to see off Matteo Arnaldi 6-7(5), 6-0, 6-1 to kick off his title defence campaign.
The talented Italian, who surprised Casper Ruud at least years Madrid Open, made an impressive start on Stadium 1 court, but Alcaraz reeled him in, cutting the errors en route to winning nine straight games.
Barring the Netflix Slam Exhibition, the Spaniard hasn’t played since rolling his ankle in Rio, but he showed no signs of injury as his movement was pedal to the metal.
I had to change just a few things. I made a few mistakes in the first set. I had to put in more first serves in the second and third sets, and I think that was a big key to improving my level a little bit, to being in the rallies—long rallies as well—to getting the rhythm, and I’m really happy to get it at the end. Sinner Sinks Kokkinakis
Jannik Sinner has now won 26 of his last 27 matches, and he showed more dominance in his opening-round victory over Thansi Kokkinakis.
The Aussie, who made the fourth round back in 2015 and had an impressive win over Marcos Giron in his opening round, had little answer for Sinner’s rasping groundstrokes as he fell to a 6-3, 6-0 loss.
After fending off a break point at 2-2 in the opener, Sinner never looked back, taking charge with his forehand and showing excellent defence from his backhand, winning the final nine games of the match to set a tie with Jan-Lennard Struff, who saved match points in the third set tie break against Borna Coric.
It was a bit breezy today, so it was tough to play, especially in the beginning because it’s my first match here. I think I can be very happy. He’s a great opponent and a great player. He serves really, really big. You always can set goal after goal and then when you reach one goal, try to work hard for the next goal,” Sinner said. “I feel like I still have to improve many things. Starting on the court, the serve I also have to improve and try to mix up the game. We worked before coming here a lot in the gym. These are the things that push me to do better and hopefully, I can show this also on the court. Sinner on his win and goals after his maiden Slam win.
