The 2024 BNP Paribas Open round of 32 is complete. It featured the shock upset of the tournament so far, as Luca Nardi defeated top seed Novak Djokovic 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
The Italian entered the main draw as a lucky loser and became the lowest-ranked player to inflict a defeat on Djokovic at the Masters 1000 level.
Elsewhere, Daniil Medvedev overcame Seb Korda in three sets, while Holger Rune, Taylor Fritz, Grigor Dimitrov and Tommy Paul all progressed in straight sets.
The other slight upset of the round was Gael Monfils taking out 28th seed and former champion Cameron Norrie after coming down from a set and 0-30 to make the 4th round for the fifth time in Indian Wells.

Nardi Nukes Djokovic
Luca Nardi only entered the main draw in Indian Wells as a lucky loser, but he’ll leave with a massive scalp on his resume and a breakthrough into the top 100 in the ATP rankings.
The Italian defeated the five-time champion and world number one Novak Djokovic 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in an impressive performance from the baseline that made Djokovic’s much-lauded defensive abilities look ordinary.
Nardi also showed plenty of deft touch in the forecourt when needed, and it was an impressive performance.
As for Djokovic, he started the match a bit off-colour and enjoyed some good moments in the second set and early in the third set but ultimately came up short.
I wouldn’t start writing his obituary yet, as matches like this show how tight the margins are at the top of men’s tennis. Just a tiny drop from your best, and there are a few hundred players out there capable of handing you a loss, assuming they can hold it together on the big stadiums like Nardi managed perfectly.
I think that before this night, no one knew me. I hope that the crowd enjoyed the game. I’m super happy with this one. I don’t know how I held my nerve. I think it is a miracle because I am a 20-year-old guy, 100 in the world, and beating Novak. It’s crazy. Nardi on his big win over Djokovic.
Medvedev Conquers Korda
Daniil Medvedev is through to the fourth round thanks to a 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 win over Sebastian Korda.
The 29th-seeded American was a bit of a bogey player for Medvedev last year, defeating him at the Australian Open and Shangai Masters in straight sets, but last year’s beaten finalist broke serve nine times to progress.
One concern for the Russian will be his serving; this season, his serve has become a slight liability rather than the weapon we’re used to. It’s down in speed, and he threw in 10 double faults during the match.
Fortunately, his return game brought up 22 break points to counter the effects of that, but he’ll be looking to tidy that up against Dimitrov in the fourth round.
Other Matches of Note
- Rune Too Strong for Musetti: The Dane won 6-2, 7-6(5) against Lorenzo Musetti. Rune was the more aggressive of the two, and although the second set was closer, he had the measure of the Italian.
- Fritz Sees Off In Form Baez: There’s little doubt Indian Wells is Fritz’s best Masters 1000 tournament as he picked up his 20th career win in the desert with a 6-2 6-2 victory over Baez, who was on a 10-match winning streak.
- Dimitrov Continues Fine Form: A 6-3 6-3 win for Grigor against the tricky Mannarino.
- Monfils Negates Norrie: The Frenchman came from a set and 0-3 hole to see off the 2021 champion to set up a tie with Casper Ruud in the last sixteen.
