Indian Wells 2024 Day 8 Recap: Medvedev, Rune, Ruud and Paul Progress into Quarter Finals

Indian Wells 2024 Day 8 Recap: Medvedev, Rune, Ruud and Paul Progress into Quarter Finals

The quarter-final lineup at the 2024 BNP Paribas Open is set after Daniil Medvedev, Holger Rune, Casper Ruud, and Tommy Paul progressed from Wednesday’s last sixteen ties.

Casper Ruud was the first to book his spot by seeing off veteran in name only, Gael Monfils, before Tommy Paul ended Luca Nardi’s run as a lucky loser.

Daniil Medeved then put in a rock-solid performance to defeat Dimitrov, and in the night session, Holger Rune fought back from the brink to defeat Taylor Fritz.

You can see the results and highlights below.

Medvedev Moves Into Quarters

Daniil Medvedev put in his best performance of the tournament so far and one of his best serving displays of recent times, seeing off Grigor Dimitrov 6-4, 6-4.

Given the match the two played at last year’s Paris Masters, I was expecting a close-run affair, but Medvedev was dominant throughout, dropping just five points behind his first serve.

The Russian’s deep court position also proved problematic for Dimitrov to overcome, and he ultimately committed too many unforced errors in the breezy conditions, firing down 29 of them compared to Medvedev’s 13.

Interestingly, Medvedev said post-match that the court speeds had varied dramatically this week; against Korda, he felt it was super slow, but against Dimitrov, it was super quick. The time of day and weather obviously play a part here and Dimi would probably have preferred a cool night session as he’d have more time on the ball, which he needs.

I think in general I played well. I was really consistent, I’m happy to beat such a great opponent in Grigor. To play against him is always a challenge and I’m happy I managed to overcome it this time. Medvedev on his consistency.

Rune Saves Match Point to Defeat Fritz

Holger Rune saved a match point as he came from a set down to defeat Taylor Fritz 2-6, 7-6(2), 6-3.

The Dane started sluggishly against the 2022 Champion as Fritz swept him aside 6-2. The second set was closer, but that didn’t stop Rune from staring down a match point at 4-5 30/40.

However, Fritz could not get a second serve return in play, and from there, Rune was revitalised, storming to the tiebreak 7-2 with some aggressive baseline hitting and the breaking in the fourth game of the third set to progress in 2 hours and 18 minutes.

It was crazy. I really just stayed in the moment and kept fighting. I tried to play from point to point, and I thought I managed to raise my level quite amazingly at the end of the second set. I’m a player who’s going to attack. I don’t care who I play; I’m going to attack anyway. Against Daniil, it’s a completely different match from today. I think the only similarity they have is the big serve; otherwise, they are two different players. Rune on his win over Fritz.

Other 4th Round Matches

  • Ruud Outhustles Monfils: A 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-4 win for the Norwegian as he ground out a victory from the baseline. Monfils started well, but his game style gave Ruud time on the ball, and after spending 3 hours on the court vs Norrie, it was the 9th seed who looked the stronger of the two.
  • Paul Ends Nardi’s Run: As is often the case, the player who causes a shock upset fails to back it up in the next round. That’s what happened to Nardi, who was comfortably ousted by Tommy Paul, 6-4, 6-3. The opening stages were competitive, but Paul took charge to make his fourth Masters 1000 quarter-final.
