Day two in Indian Wells is complete, and with more rain, there are still six round-one matches left to be completed on Friday.
With the seeded players yet to get involved, most matches are relatively wide open, but there were some surprise wins.
Dusan Lajovic, taking out Emil Ruusuvuori and Juncheng Shang, defeating Los Cabos champion Jordan Thompson, who looked powerless in the slow, heavy conditions were two winners I wouldn’t have predicted.
There were also two maiden Masters 1000 wins. Wildcard Jakub Mensik’s breakthrough season continued with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Seongchan Hong, while Alex Michelsen recorded a 6-2, 6-3 win over Jaume Munar.
You can see the full results from day two below.

Safiullin Sinks Evans
Like Murray and Norrie, Dan Evans is another Brit with an inauspicious start to 2024. He has just two wins so far, and he fell 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 to Roman Safiullin.
One of his wins this year was against the Russian a couple of weeks ago in Los Cabos, but the world number 42 avenged that loss with a comfortable victory in the desert.
Evans looked out of sorts throughout, seemingly struggling with a shoulder problem he called the trainer for. His slow start meant he was always behind in the scoreboard.
Monfils Makes Impressive Start
Gael Monfils recorded a dominant 6-1, 6-2 victory over Australia’s Max Purcell to set a second-round clash with No. 8-seeded Hubert Hurkacz.
The 37-year-old Frenchman has started the year with some decent wins, and he’s now back in the top 50 after his ranking tumbled due to injury, which kept him out of the sport for almost a year.
Purcell is usually a tricky customer, but his wily serve and volley plays were picked apart in the Indian Wells conditions. Monfils broke five times in the match and dropped just three games.
Wawrinka Muted by Machac
While it was good news for one veteran, former Indian Wells finalist Stan Wawrinka couldn’t mirror Monfils as he succumbed to a 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-2 to Tomas Machac.
As a fan, Stan’s matches of late are super annoying to watch as he fights tooth and nail and fills the highlight reel with ridiculous backhands but typically comes up short in the third set like today.
I hope he can catch fire at a tournament this year, but he’s 1-4 in 2024.
Other Matches of Note
- Raonic Makes Round 2: Nagal instead of Nadal for the Canadian, and he ran out a comfortable winner; he’ll face Holger Rune next.
- Mensik Makes Most of Wildcard: A maiden main draw M1000 win for Mensik after his final run in Doha.
- Michelsen Milestone: The youngest American winner at the Masters 1000 level since Fritz and Tiafoe in 2017
