Inside Why the Nets Fired Head Coach Jacques Vaughn

Inside Why the Nets Fired Head Coach Jacques Vaughn

Another NBA coach has been fired, after the Nets announced Monday morning that they let head coach Jacque Vaughn go, so why was he shown the door?

One of the main reasons – people within the organization were concerned that Vaughn could hurt the team’s chances of landing a star player in the future, according to Sports New York’s Ian Begley.

“Several players had lost confidence in Vaughn amid Nets’ struggles, per SNY sourcesSome within Nets had concerns that Vaughn could hinder their chances at landing a top player, SNY sources say.

Yahoo Sports’ Jake Fischer simply explained, “There was too much at stake as the team kept dwindling under Vaughn, who went 64-65 in this latest stint with Brooklyn.”

Vaughn came into the job in November of 2022, after Brooklyn fired Steve Nash just two weeks into the season. But now he has succumbed to same fate.

“This was an incredibly difficult decision, but one we feel is in the best interest of the team going forward,” Nets GM Sean Marks said in a statement. “Jacque has represented this organization with exemplary character and class for the past eight years. The consistent positivity and passion he poured into our team daily will remain with the players and staff he interacted with throughout his tenure. We thank Jacque for all he has done for the Nets and the borough of Brooklyn, and wish him, Laura and their family nothing but the best in the future.”

Fischer also believes that Marks might not be far behind Vaughn, due to his poor decision-making.

“The long-term outcome of this position will be quite telling about the overall state of Brooklyn’s organization,” Fischer wrote. “Vaughn now counts as the third coach general manager Sean Marks has hired and fired during his eight-year stewardship of basketball operations. Few lead executives get the chance to handpick a fourth after only one playoff series victory to show for their past decisions. Yes, there is mounting speculation among league personnel about whether Marks could follow suit out the door.”

The Nets have fallen to 11th in the East and have a 21-33 record on the season.
