Insider Says Andy Reid Could Retire After Playoffs

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has had one of the best stretches as a head coach over the past decade.

He’s won two Super Bowls, won the AFC West for the past eight seasons and helped turn Patrick Mahomes into one of the greatest quarterbacks of all-time.

But all good things must come to an end, and Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio told Zach Gelb of CBS Sports that the Chiefs could be bracing for Reid to retire at the end of the postseason and that top head coaching candidates may wait until Reid makes his decision before taking another job.

“I think there’s reason to believe that the Chiefs have the possibility on their radar screen,” Florio said. “So if you’re Mike Vrabel … if you’re Bill Belichick, if you’re Jim Harbaugh, if you’re one of these coaches with options, you kind of want to play it out.”

If Reid left, the Chiefs’ job would instantly become one of the most coveted head coaching jobs in NFL history.

The offense may have taken a dip in 2023, but Mahomes is still sensational and the infrastructure is good enough to withstand a head coaching change.

The next question would be: Who can replace Reid?

As Florio mentioned, coaches like Vrabel, Belichick, and Harbaugh would be good options, or perhaps the Chiefs would want to keep the hiring in-house like what the New England Patriots did with Jerod Mayo.

Someone with experience as a head coach and/or in Kansas City, like offensive coordinator Matt Nagy, defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, or even current Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy could be options.

This is all speculation, though.
