Ever since the San Francisco 49ers lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime in the Super Bowl in February, the hot topic of discussion involving the team from the Bay Area has been what will happen with star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who wants a lucrative long-term contract extension.
Even though many believed the 49ers would eventually agree to terms with Aiyuk, considering the fact the team is in a championship window and wouldn’t want to mess with the chemistry they’ve built with quarterback Brock Purdy, the two sides haven’t been able to see eye-to-eye, which has created some very public tension.
Although the 49ers brass has maintained a desire to agree to a new deal with Aiyuk, all of their actions have spoken to the contrary, with the team rumored to have tried to trade him to the Washington Commanders during the 2024 NFL Draft and then selecting talented young wideout Ricky Pearsall as a possible replacement.
Despite the tension and rumors, Aiyuk and the 49ers still were expected to come to terms on a deal, but now things have gotten really ugly as he has requested to be traded.
However, the 49ers seem to have no intention of trading Aiyuk, which makes the situation that much more confusing moving forward.
“The 49ers do not want to and do not intend to trade Brandon Aiyuk despite the fact that he has asked the team officially to move on from him,” NFL insider Adam Schefter said, via NFL on ESPN.

Although the 49ers organization claims it doesn’t want to trade Aiyuk, situations like these happen in the NFL, with teams turning around and doing the opposite days later.
That could be the case here, as there are bound to be plenty of calls from other teams trying to work out a deal to acquire Aiyuk, who is arguably one of the best receivers in the NFL right now.
