An Italian journalist claims that Napoli are closing in on a deal to sign Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood.
Mediaset and Calciomercato reporter Paolo Bargiggia posted the update on X this lunchtime, but has not provided many details.
Bargiggia wrote:

If the reporter is right, it will be quite a shock as the 22 year old looked to be closing in on a move to Marseille to work with former Brighton boss, Roberto de Zerbi.
However, there has been some backlash in the French city regarding to prospective deal, due to Greenwood’s personal history, in which he was charged, but not found guilty, of assault and attempted rape.
This may have caused Marseille to rethink and indeed another Serie A club, Lazio, were waiting in the wings hoping that their €25 million bid would be accepted as an alternative.
Napoli’s name has been far from any reports in any of the main football channels.
The bold claim has already been refuted by other sources, but none of them so far are reputable news reporters or outlets.

Meanwhile, some flesh has been put on the bones of Bargiggia’s report by other unverified sources, with one account citing SportMediaset as saying:
“Napoli are close to reaching an agreement with Manchester United for Mason Greenwood.
“The Italian club of president Aurelio De Laurentiis, in fact, has made an overbearing turn on the British player by placing a burning acceleration to the detriment of Lazio, who have been interested in the player for weeks.
“The Neapolitans, in fact, have reached an agreement in principle with the Red Devils on the basis of 30 million [Euros]”.

With so much information and misinformation flying, it is hard to know the truth of this rumour. However, with Napoli braced for the exit of Victor Osimhen this summer, it is certainly possible that they would be interested in forward players of Greenwood’s calibre at the right price point.
