Roberto De Zerbi has emerged as a surprise candidate for the Manchester United manager’s job should the club decide to sack Erik ten Hag.
As reported by Matt Hughes of The Daily Mail, United have initiated contact with De Zerbi through intermediaries, alongside reaching out to agents for Kieran McKenna, Thomas Frank, Thomas Tuchel, and Mauricio Pochettino. This forms part of their contingency planning in case Ten Hag’s tenure at Old Trafford comes to an end.
A thorough review of the season will be conducted this week to decide if Ten Hag will see out the final year of his three-year contract. The Dutch manager, who left Manchester for a short holiday on Sunday, remains uncertain about his future. Despite the speculation, Ten Hag is confident he has achieved enough to stay. He believes his tactical success in United’s FA Cup final victory over Manchester City and the significant progress made by young players under his leadership are key factors to consider.
However, the club is keeping its options open, with several high-profile names in the frame. The Guardian claim that Ratcliffe is a keen admirer of De Zerbi’s possession-based brand of football. It is to be seen if he can replicate that style at Old Trafford without a major squad overhaul.
De Zerbi’s availability makes him an attractive option, but his demanding nature regarding recruitment and previous clashes with Brighton’s owner could pose challenges for both United and Chelsea, who have extensive recruitment teams in place.
