Ja Morant Faces ‘Week-to-Week’ Recovery After Left Ankle Sprain – What It Means for the Grizzlies

The Memphis Grizzlies are facing an early challenge in the 2025-26 season, as star guard Ja Morant has sustained a left ankle sprain during practice on Sunday. The team has classified the injury as “week-to-week,” according to Damichael Cole of the Memphis Commercial Appeal.

This unfortunate timing comes just as the Grizzlies prepare to kick off their preseason schedule against the Detroit Pistons on Monday night, followed by their regular-season opener on October 22 against the New Orleans Pelicans. With this injury, there are growing concerns regarding Morant’s availability for the start of the season.

Cole reported that the Grizzlies view the two-time All-Star as “week-to-week” after the injury, which adds to the woes of a team already managing several injury issues.

This offseason, Memphis has already experienced considerable setbacks in their frontcourt. Jaren Jackson Jr., who recently signed a five-year, $240 million contract, is currently recovering from foot surgery for a turf toe injury. Additionally, Zach Edey is on the mend following surgery on his left ankle, and Brandon Clarke just underwent an arthroscopic knee procedure for synovitis, with a re-evaluation not expected until late October or early November.

Cole mentioned that Morant’s absence would be “downright brutal” for a Grizzlies roster that is already stretched thin. This difficulty has been compounded by the trade of longtime backcourt mate Desmond Bane to Orlando this summer, leaving Morant as the primary offensive force after averaging 23.2 points and 7.3 assists per game last season.

In Morant’s absence, Memphis will likely rely on Scotty Pippen Jr. and Ty Jerome to manage point guard responsibilities. Pippen has shown promise in playmaking and defense during limited minutes in the playoffs, while Jerome recently signed a three-year, $28 million contract after a breakout season with Cleveland.

Morant’s injury adds to a troubling trend of early adversity for the franchise. Regardless of whether he returns by opening night, the Grizzlies must proceed cautiously in regard to the recovery of their superstar.
