Ja Morant’s 2023-24 season debut looms, but it looks like his legal trouble is set to continue after getting subpoenaed.
The Grizzlies star was issued a subpoena to appear at an immunity hearing for a civil lawsuit in Memphis, according to ESPN’s Baxter Holmes.
The lawsuit is from over a year ago and accuses Morant of attacking of a 17-year-old boy during a pickup game in July of 2022 in Tennessee.
The boy’s name is Joshua Holloway and Morant is reportedly looking to dismiss the case.
“An immunity hearing is scheduled to begin Dec. 11 at the Shelby County Circuit Court in Memphis, where lawyers for Morant seeking to dismiss the case will argue that he was acting in self-defense for punching Joshua Holloway, then 17, after Holloway hit Morant in the chin with a basketball. The hearing is expected to last through Dec. 13 and potentially into the following week,” Baxter details. “A trial could begin in April 2024.”
Morant has not yet testified in the case, but would be questioned by his own attorney, as well as Holloway’s – Rebecca Adelman.
“On behalf of Joshua, we are preparing and will be ready for the hearing,” Adelman told ESPN.
Morant’s childhood friend Davonte Pack, his father, Tee as well as his mother, Jamie were also subpoenaed to appear and testify at the hearing.
Ja is poised to make his return to the NBA after a 25-game suspension for flashing a gun on an Instagram live.
It wasn’t the first handgun incident Morant was caught up in last year, as just before that, he was suspended for eight games as he flashed a gun in a strip club in Denver.
