Jack Draper Claims Major Victory Over Holger Rune at Indian Wells

Jack Draper Claims Major Victory Over Holger Rune at Indian Wells

Jack Draper is an ATP Masters 1000 champion after he won the 2025 Indian Wells Open, beating Holger Rune in the final.

Draper is one of the most talented players on the ATP Tour. However, he couldn’t fully show his talent in recent years due to struggles with injuries, which prevented him from making a proper breakthrough.

In the past 12 months, the British player finally managed to spend enough time on the tennis courts to build some momentum. Despite a setback at the start of the 2025 season from another injury, Draper found his best tennis at the first ATP Masters 1000 tournament of the season.

The 23-year-old Brit stunned Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals of the Indian Wells Open, and in the final, his opponent was Holger Rune, who recorded a very good win over Daniil Medvedev to reach the final.

It was a maiden Masters final for Draper, but his opponent had experience in ATP 1000 finals, having won the 2022 Paris Masters.

However, that experience did not prove valuable for Rune in this final. The 21-year-old Dane was broken in the first game of the match, and after Draper added another break, things looked bleak for Rune.

At one point, he was down 0-4 and 30-40, losing 19 of the first 26 points. Had he lost his serve again, it’s very possible that Rune would have been bageled in the opening set.

Though he avoided a bagel, he couldn’t avoid losing the first set. Draper was simply the better player on the court, converting that into an easy 6-2 win in the first set.

Draper understood that the key to winning the first set so decisively was the early break. Therefore, he approached the second set similarly.

He broke Rune’s serve in the opening game of the second set and controlled the match from there. Draper did not face a single break point throughout the entire match.

Additionally, he hit 10 aces and won 92% of points after his first serve. Draper dominated on his serve and excelled on return while Rune struggled to keep the ball in play.

This all resulted in a straightforward 6-2, 6-2 win for Draper, who lifted his first ATP Masters 1000 title at the 2025 Indian Wells Open. He will also rise to the World No. 7 position in the ATP Rankings on Monday.
