Ever since the Jacksonville Jaguars selected quarterback Trevor Lawrence out of Clemson University with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, the future has looked bright for the struggling franchise, as it seems as though they had finally found a franchise quarterback worth building around.
Although Lawrence’s first season with the Jaguars was forgettable, to say the least, as he threw 17 interceptions and only 12 touchdowns, resulting in the team finishing the campaign with a 3-14 record, the former Tigers star was able to turn things around the following season.
Lawrence led the Jaguars to a winning record during the 2022 NFL season at 9-8, earning his first Pro Bowl selection after throwing for 4,113 yards, 25 touchdowns, and only eight interceptions.
Despite regressing some during the 2023 campaign, when the Jaguars had some high expectations after the stellar performance in 2022, Lawrence still proved his worth to the team, which resulted in the star quarterback signing a massive contract extension with Jacksonville on Thursday.
Longtime team owner Shad Khan released a statement on Friday about the Lawrence extension and how happy he is that they were able to get it done, via Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
With Lawrence securing this contract extension this week, he becomes the highest-paid quarterback in the league, along with Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals, when it comes to annual salary, at $55 million per season.
The real question now is whether Lawrence can live up to this contract and continue to push the Jaguars forward in hopes of becoming a legitimate title contender in the AFC.
