Despite being expected to have at least a shot at reaching the Super Bowl this season, the Cincinnati Bengals have been a big disappointment so far. They lost their first three games, and their lone win came against the lowly Carolina Panthers. With a 1-3 record, they host the Baltimore Ravens in Week 5, giving them an opportunity to boost their record and earn a statement win against a divisional rival.
Star wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase emphasizes the importance of establishing the “first tone” for success. He stated, “We just gotta come out and set a tone when we first get the ball or they first get the ball, defense or offense. … It’s all about setting the first tone in the game,” via the Bengals on X.
Chase, still seeking a contract extension, and quarterback Joe Burrow have performed well, but the Bengals defense has been a concern. Ranking near the bottom of the NFL in key defensive metrics, the defense has struggled to stop the run, with star defensive end Trey Hendrickson not performing up to his usual standard.
The Bengals’ inability to stop the run could be costly against the Ravens, a team featuring one of the game’s best dual-threat QBs in Lamar Jackson and star running back Derrick Henry. The Ravens lead in rushing yards and are tied for fourth in rushing touchdowns, with Henry leading the league in rushing yards and touchdowns.
A victory against the Ravens would significantly boost the Bengals’ playoff hopes and reinforce their status as legitimate contenders for the Super Bowl.
