James Scanlon shines in Gibraltar’s 1-0 victory over San Marino as Manchester United youngster impresses – Latest on Man United’s progress and transfer updates

Manchester United youngster James Scanlon continues strong start to season in 1-0 win for Gibraltar over San Marino - Man United News And Transfer News

Manchester United academy product James Scanlon represented Gibraltar for his seventh cap last night in a 1-0 Nations League victory over San Marino.

The 18 year old has made a great start to the season for the United under 18s as he has scored five goals and provided two assists in just five league matches.

The versatile youngster can play in a range of midfield and wing positions but actually filled in at fullback for the senior team whilst on the pre-season tour of the United States of America.

Scanlon lined up in a more familiar right wing position for his nation after netting his first senior goal in a 2-2 draw with Liechtenstein last month in the opening game of the Nations League group stage.

Gibraltar won the match 1-0 in a tight affair where both sides had 11 shots on goal and the home side edged possession with 51%.

The breakthrough came in the 62 minute when Ethan Britto fired home.

Scanlon received a rating of 6.8 from Sofascore, before being subbed off in the 77th minute of action.

He had 27 touches of the ball, completing 10 out of 13 passes for a completion rate of 77%.

Scanlon made one key pass and had one shot off target against the San Marino defence.

He won three out of his six ground duels and two out of his four aerial battles.

Scanlon has had quite the rapid rise in international football, as he only made his senior debut in June but he is quickly closing in on ten caps in his teenage years.

The win took Gibraltar top of their group and they will aim to extend their lead when they travel to Liechtenstein on Sunday evening, where Scanlon will hope to play another big role in a positive result for his side.
