Jannik Sinner has been struggling with an injury during the 2024 Madrid Open, and it has forced him to withdraw from the tournament.
The young Italian entered the draw of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in the Spanish capital for the first time as the top seed, and while his debut as the top-seeded player at a Masters events went well tennis-wise, his body let him down.
During his win over Pavel Kotov, Sinner started experiencing some discomfort, and during his victory over Karen Khachanov, it seemingly persisted, as the 22-year-old spoke about it also after the match.
Prior to his match against Khachanov, Sinner made a last-minute decision to participate in the match, and after the match, he said that he will once again need to assess whether he will be capable of competing.
His next match was supposed to be against Felix Auger-Aliassime, and the top-seeded player even got one more day of rest, as he wasn’t scheduled to play on Wednesday, as some of his colleagues, but on Thursday.
Still, already on Wednesday, Sinner made a decision to withdraw from the tournament ahead of the match, sending Auger-Aliassime into the semi-final of the 2024 Madrid Open.
As the young player hinted during his participation at La Caja Magica, he wants to be ready for the upcoming Italian Open in Rome, which is his home ATP Masters 1000 tournament, and naturally, it’s more important to him than other events.
On top of that, right after the event in Rome, there is the second Grand Slam tournament of the season – the French Open, and since Sinner will be one of the favourites, he will be looking also at that event with an attempt to stay healthy.
His next goal now, however, will be the Italian Open, which runs from May 8th until 19th, 2024.
