Jannik Sinner will not be competing at the 2024 Italian Open in Rome, as an injury forced him to withdraw from the tournament.
Like any tennis player, the Italian wants to play on his home soil, in front of his home fans, friends, and family. However, this year, it won’t be possible for Sinner, as he had to withdraw from the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Rome.
He previously withdrew from the quarter-final at the 2024 Madrid Open, and the same injury kept him also out of play ahead of the last ATP Masters 1000 tournament prior to the season’s second Grand Slam.
The 22-year-old expressed his desire to compete at Foro Italico, but after consulting doctors again, prior to the tournament, which starts on May 8th, 2024, he made a difficult decision to withdraw from the tournament.
Sinner announced his withdrawal on his social media accounts, explaining that doctors advised him not to play in the tournament.
“It is not easy to write this message but after speaking again with the doctors and specialists about my hip problems I have to announce that unfortunately I will not be able to play in Rome. Obviously I’m very sad that I didn’t recover, it being one of my favorite tournaments ever.”
Still, Sinner will make an appearance at Foro Italico, but it won’t be to play a match, but just to greet the fans, as he’s looking to recover for the French Open.
“I couldn’t wait to come back and play at home in front of the Italian crowd. I will still come to Rome for a few days and stop by the Foro Italico. Thank you for your messages of support which I appreciate very much! Now I will work with my team and doctors to be ready for Roland Garros. See you soon.”
