Jesse Marsch was once considered for the U.S. men’s national team head coaching position, but now he is content in his role as Canada boss. Ahead of Canada’s Copa America third-place match against Uruguay, Marsch criticized U.S. Soccer. Despite previous coaching stints at Red Bull Salzburg, RB Leipzig, and Leeds United, Marsch is now enjoying his first major international opportunity with Canada.
Gregg Berhalter, who recently parted ways with the USMNT after their disappointing Copa America exit, had previously been chosen over Marsch for the coaching position. While Berhalter had some success with the USMNT, including winning two CONCACAF Nations League titles, a Gold Cup, and reaching the Round of 16 at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, he struggled in his second spell as coach.
Canada has had a strong showing in the Copa America, surpassing the performance of any other Concacaf nation. Marsch commended the Canadian leadership and expressed his satisfaction with his current role, stating that he has no interest in the U.S. job unless there are significant changes within the organization.
Marsch is looking forward to facing the USMNT in September at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Missouri.
