For the first time in what seems like forever, there are tangible reasons for Los Angeles Chargers fans to be optimistic and even excited.

They finally have a top-notch head coach in Jim Harbaugh, who is a proven winner and has a track record of building a winning culture wherever he goes, and they have the No. 5 pick in this year’s NFL Draft.

This year’s draft class is rich in potential-laden quarterbacks, and since the Bolts already have a good one in Justin Herbert, they could have their choice of any non-QB when they’re on the clock on day one of the draft.

Harbaugh said, per Pro Football Focus, that it could result in them essentially, in his view, having the top pick.

Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, and Drake Maye are all expected to be the first three players selected, and in recent weeks, University of Michigan signal-caller J.J. McCarthy has moved up the draft board.

The Arizona Cardinals, who have two-time Pro Bowler Kyler Murray under center, have the No. 4 pick, and there are rumors they may trade it to a team such as the Minnesota Vikings, who badly need a quarterback.

If all that plays out, L.A. would have the ability to take someone such as Marvin Harrison Jr., whom many consider the best wide receiver prospect this year, at No. 5.

They could also go with Malik Nabers or Rome Odunze, two other high-level WR prospects, at No. 5.

However, some feel that because of Harbaugh’s ground-and-pound offensive philosophy, he may go with offensive tackle Joe Alt at No. 5.

Another option for the Chargers is to trade down in order to end up with two lower first-round picks, as they need a legitimate WR1, an interior offensive lineman, a strong right tackle, and help in the secondary.
