JJ Redick Shares Valuable Coaching Insights from His Inaugural Season with the Lakers

Taking over as head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers was no small task for JJ Redick. Stepping into a storied franchise synonymous with championship success and managing stars like LeBron James and Luka Doncic came with immediate expectations and no room for mistakes.

In a candid assessment of his inaugural season, Redick acknowledged that shifting from player to coach forced him to adapt rapidly, both mentally and emotionally.

“This season, I invested a lot of time working with my performance coach, going through extensive journaling and self-reflection,” Redick shared with the media. “I learned that it’s crucial to know when to turn the intensity on and off, and I’ve always recognized that not everyone shares the same mindset as Kobe.”

He elaborated, “I’m not saying I am like Kobe, but individuals like him and Tom Brady possess a unique drive. It’s essential to connect with players where they are at. That doesn’t lower the standards or expectations, but it does require a level of empathy.”

However, that understanding didn’t come easily. Redick recalled allowing the immense expectations to affect him early in the season, particularly recalling a preseason breakdown in Palm Springs fueled by rising frustrations. After years as a player renowned for his precision and intensity, the rookie coach had to navigate the delicate balance between maintaining high standards and embodying human compassion.

“Every morning, you need to ask yourself: What do I need to do to excel in my role? The answer changes daily,” Redick noted. “I see summer as a time for growth beyond just game strategies. It’s about the culture I want to create and sustain. Looking at figures like Sean McVay and Tom Brady embodies excellence. Why wouldn’t I seize that opportunity?”
