Joe Schoen Gives Daniel Jones a Final Opportunity in New York

New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen emphasized on the premiere episode of Hard Knocks: Offseason with the New York Giants on HBO that this is the year for Daniel Jones to prove himself in New York.

One More Chance For Daniel Jones

After five years with the Giants, Daniel Jones has been given one more opportunity in the 2024 season to establish himself as a legitimate starting quarterback in the league.

Last season, Jones was limited to just six starts for the Giants due to an ACL tear that sidelined him for the remainder of the year after nine weeks of play.

Despite making it to week nine, Jones only started six games for the Giants as a pinched nerve in his neck also kept him out of earlier matchups.

Giants GM Joe Schoen was candid about Jones in the first episode of Hard Knocks: Offseason with the New York Giants, expressing sympathy for his QB while acknowledging the need to strengthen other positions in New York.

“You’re paying the guy (Jones) $40 million,” Schoen remarked. “It’s not to hand the ball off to a $12 million back.”

“We lose Saquon, what’s our identity gonna be?”

“My plan is [to] address the offensive line at some point here in free agency. We’re sitting at [No.] 6, there’s a chance there’s an offensive weapon there.”

Schoen was referencing the running back situation, particularly Saquon Barkley’s unexpected departure, as the popular star left the Giants in the offseason to seek success in Philadelphia. However, regardless of who replaces Barkley, Schoen remains committed to giving Jones another opportunity.

“This is the year for Daniel. Plan all along was [to] give him a couple years. Is he our guy for the next 10 years? Or do we need to pivot and find somebody else?”

New York finished with a 6-11 record last season, a disappointing result following a 9-7 season in 2022 that ended in a Divisional match loss. But with Jones expected to return at the start of next season, optimism is once again high in New York.
