In the 2023-24 season, the Philadelphia 76ers finished with a 47-35 record. They placed third out of five teams in the Atlantic Division and seventh in the Eastern Conference. In the 2024 playoffs, the Sixers faced the Knicks in the first round and lost the series in six games, marking their second first-round elimination in four seasons.
Despite the playoff disappointment, Joel Embiid remains a key player for the team, and the 76ers are aware of the championship window that is open. According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, the 76ers have signed Embiid to a three-year, $193 million max extension, extending his contract with the team through the 2028-29 season. Embiid also declined his player option for the 2026-27 season and is set to earn $69 million in the final year of his new extension, bringing his career earnings to $514.8 million.

Following his league MVP win in 2022-23, Joel Embiid dealt with injuries in the 2023-24 season. The seven-time all-star only played in 39 games for the Sixers, but still put up impressive numbers on the court. He averaged 34.7 points, 11.0 rebounds, 5.6 assists, 1.2 steals, and 1.7 blocks per game, surpassing his MVP season statistics. However, a new league rule required players to participate in at least 65 games to be eligible for end-of-season awards, which Embiid did not meet.
Aside from emboldening their MVP center, Philadelphia made significant investments in the offseason. All-star guard Tyrese Maxey received a $204 million deal, and the team signed Paul George to a four-year, $212 million contract in free agency. Additionally, the team added Caleb Martin, Eric Gordon, and Andre Drummond, while re-signing Kelly Oubre and Kyle Lowry. Joel Embiid continues to lead the franchise as they aim for an NBA title, with a talented roster supporting him like never before.
