Joel Embiid Responds to Gilbert Arenas’ Offensive Comments about South Sudan

Embiid

Gilbert Arenas has recently sparked controversy with his inappropriate comments about Joel Embiid and the South Sudan Olympic team.

In a surprising turn of events, Team USA narrowly defeated South Sudan 101-100 in an exhibition game before the Paris Olympics, despite their strong lineup.

A video of Arenas criticizing Team USA and making xenophobic remarks about South Sudan went viral after the game.

“We almost lost to some Africans,” Arenas commented, followed by a disparaging gesture. He also targeted Joel Embiid, implying he was sabotaging the game for his relatives.

Embarrassed by the video, Embiid expressed his disappointment upon learning about the content.

“I don’t condone it,” Embiid stated. “I’m African first and foremost. I may represent Team USA, but my roots are Cameroonian. If the comments were negative, it’s disheartening.”

Embiid highlighted the positive impact African basketball has had on his life and career.

“African basketball has allowed us to make a difference, even in my current position. I can still make a significant impact in my homeland and across Africa,” Embiid shared.

Team USA is set to face South Sudan again during the group stage in Paris on July 31.
