Johnny Cardoso named Americans Abroad Player of the Week

Americans Abroad Player of the Week: Johnny Cardoso

Real Betis got back on track in La Liga play Saturday and Johnny Cardoso was among the positive performers for the club.

Cardoso logged a strong 90 minutes as Real Betis defeated Osasuna 2-1 away from home. The U.S. men’s national team midfielder earned SBI Americans Abroad Player of the Week honors in the process.

Cardoso did not feature in the USMNT’s first window under Mauricio Pochettino, but did get back to playing. The 23-year-old led all players in fouls drawn (5) and duels won (6), helping Manuel Pellegrini’s squad leapfrog Osasuna in the league table.

With six La Liga appearances under his belt now, Cardoso will aim to retain his spot for the resumption of Real Betis’ UEFA Europa Conference League schedule this week. The Spanish club hosts FC Kobenhaven on Thursday, seeking their first win in this season’s group stage.

Here is a look at some of the other top Americans Abroad performers from this past week:

Christian Pulisic

The good times continued for Christian Pulisic and AC Milan.

Pulisic registered his third Serie A assist of the season as the Rossoneri defeated Udinese 1-0 at home. The USMNT star set up Samuel Chukwueze for the only goal of the match, continuing a stellar run of form for the 26-year-old.

Pulisic has been AC Milan’s best player of the season so far.

Josh Sargent

It wasn’t a Top 10 assist or anything, but it was another goal contribution for Josh Sargent.

Sargent registered his fourth helper of the EFL Championship campaign as Norwich City tied Stoke City 1-1. The USMNT forward set up Ante Crnac for Norwich’s opener before Stoke City equalized before halftime.

Sargent has been impactful in numerous ways for the Canaries this fall.

Korbin Albert

Korbin Albert continued to make things happen in the offensive third for PSG.

The USWNT midfielder scored her second league goal of the season as PSG stayed perfect with a 2-1 victory over FC Fleury. Albert, 21, who broke into PSG’s squad last season, has helped PSG to a 5-0-0 record in the Division 1 Feminine this fall.

Gabriel Slonina

Barnsley got back to winning ways in League One action on Saturday with Gabriel Slonina contributing to the road result.

Slonina made four saves as Barnsley defeated Blackpool 2-1 away from home. The Chelsea loanee has continued to hold the No. 1 job in Darrell Clarke’s squad, impressing at times in league play.

What did you think of these individual performances this past weekend? Was there anyone left off the list that you would’ve added?
