Johnny Cardoso’s impactful month of February for La Liga side Real Betis has earned him his first major honor for the club.
Cardoso was named La Liga’s U-23 Player of the Month for February, the league announced Wednesday. The U.S. men’s national team midfielder edged Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga, Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal, Alaves’ Samu Omorodion, and Getafe’s Mason Greenwood for the monthly honor.
The 22-year-old Cardoso made a permanent move from Brazilian club Internacional to Real Betis in January and since has made eight combined appearances for Manuel Pellegrini’s men. Real Betis won two and tied two of their four league matches in February, while Cardoso scored one goal and added one assist.
Real Betis recently defeated Athletic Bilbao 3-1 last weekend with Cardoso celebrating his first goal for the club.
Up next in La Liga action for fifth-place Real Betis is a March 3 date with Atletico Madrid. Cardoso’s impactful run of form could boost his chances of earning a USMNT call-up for the CONCACAF Nations League Final Four in late-March.
