Jon Rahm has withdrawn from this week’s US Open at Pinehurst due to an injured foot.
The Spaniard exited after just six holes of the second round of LIV Houston on Saturday with an infection in his left foot. Despite arriving at Pinehurst on Tuesday in hopes of recovering, Rahm later announced on social media: “After consulting with numerous doctors and my team, I have decided it is best for my long-term health to withdraw from this week’s US Open Championship. To say I’m disappointed is a massive understatement.”
During a news conference on Tuesday, Rahm expressed concerns about his foot, unsure if it would heal in time for the tournament.
“It is doing better, but the pain is still high,” mentioned the 29-year-old. “I have a little hole between my pinky toe and next one that got infected. I received a pain-numbing shot before the second round in Houston, expecting it to last the entire round, but it wore off after just two holes. The infection is now under control, but there is still swelling and pain.
“I walked out here in a shoe and flip-flop, aiming to keep the area dry and facilitate healing as quickly as possible. However, the body can only recover at its own pace.”
Rahm, who claimed his first major title at the 2021 US Open at Torrey Pines, has not secured a win since the Masters last year. He joined LIV Golf earlier this year but is yet to clinch a victory on the circuit. Following a tied 45th finish at the Masters in April, he missed the cut in last month’s PGA Championship.
