Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones expressed frustration with the team’s performance after their ninth defeat in twelve games, putting head coach Arne Slot‘s future in jeopardy. The effects of a painful 4-1 loss to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League have intensified scrutiny on Slot.
Despite the mounting pressure, Slot claims he maintains the trust of the club’s hierarchy and isn’t currently worried about losing his job. However, the team’s struggles aren’t just about the scores; they mark the first occasion in 72 years that Liverpool has lost three matches by three or more goals, following defeats to Nottingham Forest and Manchester City earlier in the season.
“I honestly don’t have the answers. It’s simply unacceptable,” Jones stated on RTE. “I’m beyond anger. I’m at a point where I’m lost for words.”
Jones emphasized the need for the team to reclaim its identity and renowned status as one of the world’s premier clubs, acknowledging the urgent need for change.
The stark contrast from a team that effortlessly claimed the Premier League title just six months ago to one that is now booed by its own supporters demonstrates the challenge Slot faces. Upcoming matches against West Ham and Sunderland could be crucial for his position.
After the humiliating loss, Slot remarked, “I feel secure and have a lot of support from above. While it would be wonderful to achieve a victory, it’s normal for questions to arise when performances decline.”
Slot has been under pressure not only for the team’s failing performance but also for his reluctance to implement changes during this rough patch. Nevertheless, he cannot bear responsibility for all individual errors that have plagued players like center-back Ibrahima Konaté this season. The same issues extend to Virgil van Dijk, who erred by conceding a penalty for a needless handball that allowed Ivan Perišić to score first.
Dominik Szoboszlai, the standout performer for Liverpool this season, managed to equalize, but the team ultimately fell victim to goals from Guus Til and two from Couhaib Driouech, who hastened Liverpool’s embarrassment in the second half.
Post-match, many players swiftly left Anfield, including the usually composed Van Dijk, who avoided speaking to the media. Slot added, “It’s about the team as a whole. Everyone, including myself, must do better. Now is not the time to highlight individual mistakes.”
