Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has lavished praise on the performance of Sofyan Amrabat in Fenerbahce’s 1-3 defeat to Galatasaray.
Amrabat donned the famous red shirt of Manchester United for one season, playing 30 times for the Red Devils in total.
He struggled to break into the first team to get regular starts or minutes during his stay, but Erik ten Hag reportedly wanted to keep him at the club this year.
United were in contact with the Moroccan throughout the summer window in case a deal for top target Manuel Ugarte fell through, but they signed the Uruguayan on deadline day.
Consequently, Amrabat joined Mourinho at Fenerbahce late on in the window and has played two games for his new club.
Speaking after his side’s defeat in the Istanbul derby, Mourinho praised the impact of his new signing after he joined the action in the second half.
His side were already 0-2 down when Amrabat stepped onto the pitch and he helped stem the Galatasaray tide.
Mourinho commented after the game during the post-match press conference, “Amrabat was very good in the second half.”
“He played wonderfully. He provided the fluidity that was missing in the first half.”
Amrabat completed 90% of his passes in the second half and won two out of his three ground duels in his second half performance.
Mourinho has come under pressure after losing such a crucial match and been labelled “the crying one” by Galatasaray after the recent defeat, so he will be hoping that Amrabat can help shore up his midfield moving forward.
The 28 year old midfield general will be hoping to make his first start for his new club when they host Royale Union Saint-Gilloise tomorrow night in the Europa League before welcoming United to what promises to be a hostile Istanbul on the 24th of October in the same competition.
