Justin Rose Uncovers Key Distinction in Swing Mechanism During Exclusive Demonstration

WATCH: Justin Rose reveals secret difference between 'feel and real' in swing drill

Justin Rose on the range

England’s Justin Rose is one of the great supporters of other golfers in the world right now.

He backs junior golf through the Justin Rose Telegraph Junior Golf Championship.

When the Ladies European Tour golfers had nowhere to play during the pandemic he and his wife Kate created the Rose Ladies Series – and their support continues to this day with the Rose Ladies Open which has the largest prize fund on the second tier LET Access Series.

Rose even played the older brother role to Robert MacIntyre during the 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome.

And the winner of the 2013 US Open can also help your game.

In this video he explains the secret behind his famous pre-shot contortions on the range and out on the course.

“It’s a drill that I do often,” he says. “I’m rehearsing a feel that I want to make.

“Now that feel makes it look like I’m putting the club way behind me.

“But the reason I’m doing it is that I’m trying to create the sensation and the feel in my body that I need to hit the golf shot.

“I don’t want the club to be here in delivery, that’s way too far behind me.

“But as soon as I bring rotation to the target into play this feel turns into that impact delivery.”

At this point Rose demonstrates both what he has achieved and also the danger of not contriving to find that position.

“It’s a little bit like a water skier,” he explains. “When the boat is turning, the water skier gets thrown out. I’m the boat and the club is the water skier.

“So, essentially, as you’re turning to the left, centrifugal force tends to throw the club far out so I’m trying to put the club in a position where I can now turn and that club gets a free ride into the impact

“It looks like a technical flaw but I’m not really looking at the exact positions.

“I’m just trying to create a feel and a lot of that feel is that I’m staying on my right leg, into my right hip, because one of my faults is that I get into my left side too early, and then the clubs too much in front of me.

“So by staying here, I’m letting my left arm drop as I stay closed. By staying closed I mean with my back to the target.”

He reminds us: “I’ll never actually be in this position, but the sensation is there and as soon as I put some speed in, and turn, everything is going to be a nice delivery to hit a proper shot.

“Feel and real are two completely different things.”

He demonstrates again.

“Here’s my feel … and here’s my real.”
